Let us introduce you to a 36 year old guy with a love of fishing and country music.
Currently living at home with his mum he enjoys a full life which includes work two mornings a week and attending his favourite fishing club meetings on Saturdays. Due to a degenerative condition, it has been critical to maintain regular physiotherapy and stay as active as possible in the community. He has a team of support workers that provide daily assistance in the morning and in the afternoon. Up until now mum has been coordinating all support and administration relating to his everyday life and is now looking to step back a little and pass some of this role onto a dynamic and engaging Supporter and Coordinator.
Direct Support – The support role generally facilitates the afternoon activities which include shopping for the evening meal which he loves to prepare for Mum when she gets home on Thursday evenings. You may also help him to plan his shopping list, organise and tidy his kitchen, fridge etc. He loves to chat about his hobbies and interests while he is working. Weekends involve getting out and about in the community, there is a desire to explore some art-based activities such as painting, clay work and drawing. His love of Country Music may also see you attending live concerts together.
Coordinator – As a coordinator you will be filling Mum’s shoes and taking over a number of responsibilities which include supporting and managing the team, coordinating agency supports, allied health appointments and the day to day administration required to ensure things run smoothly.
Tuesday 2:30pm – 5.30 pm
Thursday 2:30pm – 5:30pm
Alternate Saturdays/Sundays – between 3 to 5hours depending on the activity
Coordinator hours will vary from week to week reflective of needs at any given time however an average of 2 hours per week is anticipated.
A fun loving and enthusiastic personality with an interest in fishing, country music, art and cooking will make you a great fit for this man’s life. The ability to facilitate day to day living with a person-centred approach that respects decisions and choices will be imperative to building a strong relationship with him. You’d identify as having a unique ability to be the companion that is an equal whilst meeting his needs and facilitating an independent life.
Exceptional communication with a track record of successful leadership and a flair for administration and process implementation will also be key to successful outcomes as the Coordinator.
– Experience or exposure to working with and supporting people with different abilities
– Ability to resource and initiate new activities in the community in line with desires and interests
– Effective time management, organisational and problem-solving skills including flexibility to provide ‘on call’ support to members of the team.
– Capacity to work a few hours from your own home, providing own resources and equipment required including phone, internet and computer.
– Experience in developing and implementing processes and procedures
– Criminal History Screen (or willing to obtain)
– First Aid and CPR (or willing to obtain)
– Car and open drivers licence
Immersing yourself in this man’s life for a few hours a week will help you to understand his needs and desires, providing you with a platform to contribute to his quality of life. Your observations and input will be welcomed, and you will certainly have plenty of scope to help him develop his independence and enjoyment of life. You will relish the opportunity to bring your administration, leadership and coordination skills to the role and provide a true sense of relief for mum knowing that all is running smoothly.
Training will be provided to include a full induction, buddy shifts and ongoing development and support.
