Forum: Implementation of the Mental Health Act 2016

On 5 March 2017, the Queensland Mental Health Act 2000 was replaced with the Mental Health Act 2016.

To prepare for key changes in the new Act, an implementation project was conducted for 12 months before the changes commenced. The Department of Health is now evaluating the implementation project to review how the new Act has been applied in mental health services and consider whether key changes have been implemented effectively.

This community forum is to collect feedback from community members including consumers, their families, carers and people who support them, about their experiences with the Mental Health Act 2016 – including feedback on the challenges and strengths of key policies. The consultation will gather ideas from members of the community which will be provided to the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist, to ensure that the Mental Health Act 2016 continues to meet the needs of community.

Together with additional research and data collection, the feedback will inform an evaluation report on the Act’s implementation.
